Longchamps manuscripts, 1780-1784.

Manuscripts relating to the attack of the Chevalier de Longchamps on Barbé-Marbois in 1784, consisting of the original depositions and testimony in French and English signed by Marbois and other French residents of Philadelphia at the time. The manuscripts describe the attacks of Longchamps on Marbois in the house of the French Minister; their historic fight near the Coffee House on Front Street, where they broke canes on each other's backs; Longchamps' bad reputation and quarrelsome nature; his imprisonment in jail; etc. Also included is the proclamation issued by the Continental Congress for the apprehension of Longchamps, May 29, 1784, signed by Charles Thomson. Together with these items is a notification to M. Darty of his appointment as First Surgeon in Rochambeau's army, 1780.
